What makes olive oil from Puglia so special?

Koudgeperste extra vierge olijfolie uit Puglia – Uliveto di Mede

What makes olive oil from Puglia so special?

Puglia, the heel of the Italian boot, produces more than 40% of all Italian olive oil. But not all olive oil from this region is the same. The difference between an artisanal olive oil from a small family farm and a supermarket bottle comes down to three crucial factors: origin, method and freshness.

Cold pressing: why it matters

Real extra virgin olive oil is cold-pressed — that is, pressed without heat, at a temperature below 27°C. This preserves the full flavour and the valuable polyphenols. Polyphenols are natural antioxidants associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, anti-inflammatory effects and healthy blood pressure.

Supermarket olive oil is often refined with heat and chemicals so it can be produced in large quantities. The result: a neutral oil with no flavour, no aroma and no health benefits.

No middlemen = fresh olive oil

At Uliveto di Mede, the olive oil goes straight from our own olive grove in Puglia to your table. No exporters, no importers, no distributors. That means the oil you receive is as fresh as it can be — and you can taste it.

Industrial olive oil can be months or even years old by the time it sits on a supermarket shelf. Fresh extra virgin olive oil has a fruity, slightly peppery flavour with a characteristic bitterness — a sign of high quality and plenty of polyphenols.

How do you recognise good olive oil?

- Flavour: fruity, slightly bitter, with a light sting in the throat (that's the polyphenols)
- Colour: golden green — not too pale, not too dark
- Aroma: freshly cut grass, green tomato or almond
- Origin: stated on the label, ideally one specific region
- Harvest date: not just a best-before date but also when the olives were picked

Why choose Uliveto di Mede?

Our olive grove in Puglia has been managed for generations using traditional methods. We produce in small batches so that quality is never sacrificed for quantity. Every litre of olive oil we sell comes from our own trees — not from an anonymous wholesaler.

The result is an extra virgin olive oil you can really taste: on a piece of bread, over a salad, or as a finishing touch on pasta. Try it yourself and discover the difference.
